Squirrels may seem cute as they scamper around trees, but they can cause significant problems when they invade homes. In our area there are three common types of squirrels—grey, red, and flying. They create havoc by making holes into structures, nesting in attics, chewing through wires, and damaging insulation. Here’s a list of our 3 most common squirrels we encounter. Grey squirrels are the most common species in the region. They are known for their bushy tails and adaptability to urban environments. Holes made by these squirrels are typically a bit smaller than a baseball.
Red squirrels, while smaller than their grey counterparts, can also pose challenges. They are known for their aggressive nature and tendency to invade homes in search of food and shelter. When red squirrels enter a property they often cache walnuts and pine cones in walls and ceilings, they may cause damage to insulation and wiring, leading to costly repairs. Holes made by red squirrels are typically golf ball sized.
Flying squirrels, though less common, can be just as troublesome. These nocturnal creatures are known for gliding through the trees, but they can also find their way into attics and walls. Their ability to fit through small gaps means that homeowners may not even realize they have a flying squirrel problem until damage occurs.
